The 38th Annual Honolulu Marathon

The lead runners take off of the starting line at the 38th Annual Honolulu Marathon on December 12, 2010 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Leading the pack in jersey F1 is Svetlana Zakharova, the 2009 champion.

Once again i found myself covering the Honolulu Marathon. I covered it back in 2008 for the Honolulu Marathon Association with Ronen Zilberman and Joaquin Siopack. Joaquin and I were both hired by Ronen, the Marathon's Staff Photographer. This year however, Ronen and I were joined by Jay Metzger, Greg Yamamoto, and Norman Shapiro. For those of you who don't know, Greg used to be the Photo Editor, my boss, at The Honolulu Advertiser, and Norman was a fellow Staff Photographer. Jay is the Multimedia Specialist at the University of Hawaii at Manoa's Athletics Department. All in all, Ronen assembled a pretty good team that I was proud to be apart of.

Ronen and Jay covered the lead runners for the Men's and Women's races, Norm covered Waikiki and the finishline while Greg and I covered the rest of the course. With the exception of Norm, we all covered the start of the race. Jay and Ronen needed to be on the chase vehicles early on so Greg and I took care of the starting line for images. Below, mixed in with single still images are diptychs that I think help tell a story about the Marathon.

The beginning to the end. Runners stretch and relax before and after the marathon.

Start and Finish. Alpha and Omega. Beginning and End.
Ronen had one major shot that he wanted me to get. The "Quintessential Hawaii" photo. A photo that screamed Hawaii. One that the Marathon could use in travel magazines. Especially with the sun rising over Oahu, bathing the runners in its golden light. The perfect place?? 18th Avenue. My bike driver Timmy Wong and I headed to 18th Avenue and i was able to make a couple of frames of the sun rising bathing everyone in its golden light...with palm trees and the ocean in the background.
